Chihuahua - Small and fragile but alert and bold, these dogs are the world's smallest breed. They are named after the Mexican state from which it was first exported. One undisputed fact is that Chihuahuas are the ultimate toy lap dogs. Both the short haired and more temperature resistant long haired variety offer humor, comfort and companionship. Their coats come in many colors from white to black/tan and many colors in between. Grooming is minimal for the short coats and more frequently for the long coats. Chihuahuas weigh 2 to 6 lbs and stand 6-9" at the shoulders. Sizes of Chihuahuas: ( Some breeders use different terms but all are basically the same) * Small - Smaller - Smallest * if you like! * "Smallest" -Very delicate. Will weigh between 2 and 3lbs full grown. This size Chihuahua needs extra attention and a lot of lap time. Will be a perfect "purse puppy" - they love to ride in the car and are excited to go places as long as they are kept warm. It is not recommended for breeding or to have around small children. "Smaller" - these will weigh between 3 & 4 lbs, still small enough for a "purse puppy" but not as fragile as the smallest Chihuahua. As Chihuahua breeders we still do not recommend this size female for breeding . Standard - will weigh up to 6 lbs. They are a joy to have around. Still small enough to be your ultimate lap dog and will be forever your loyal friend and companion. |
THE TEACUP MYTH The official A.K.C.Breed Standard describes the Chihuahua as a small dog that comes in two varieties or coat types. The difference in coat type (the Long Coat or the Smooth Coat) is the only official description used to identify a difference within this breed. The Chihuahua Standard does not categorize the Chihuahua by size. For the purpose of showing and record keeping, the American Kennel Club includes the Chihuahua in the Toy Group (along with 19 other breeds). Therefore, regardless of their weight or physical structure, ALL Chihuahuas registered with A.K.C. are considered to be a toy breed of dog. The additional adjectives used to describe the size difference and physical characteristics of the Chihuahua are many; and have been misused for so long they now seem legitimate. Tea-cup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard, Deer Type, Apple Head are just a few of the many adjectives we have heard over the years. These descriptions/adjectives are misleading and incorrect and are used many times to dupe the unsuspecting public for monetary gain. As with all living things, there will be size differences. Human brothers and sisters will be shorter or taller, fatter or thinner. They are described as humans, male or female, and there is rarely if ever a need to break the description down more. The same is true in the Chihuahua; they are Chihuahuas-Long Coat/Smooth Coat, Male/Female. Occasionally, within a litter, there may be a puppy that is unusually small. That puppy is a small Chihuahua and any other description is not correct. To add any of these additional adjectives to a particular puppy is to misrepresent that animal as something that is rare or unusual and causes confusion among those looking to purchase a Chihuahua. Many people looking for a Chihuahua do want the very small puppy. While we agree they are adorable and can be very healthy, the buyer should be made aware of the extra care that may be needed in regard to their general health and well being. Please be sure to do your home work if you want a Tiny Chihuahua they can have lots and lots of health problems and it can become very expensive with medical bills. Let alone the heartbreak if they can’t help the problems. They are a living breathing animal not a toy. A CHIHUAHUA by any other name is still a CHIHUAHUA. |
